  • Juniper contract renewal to drive Telefónica infrastructure towards a 400G environment.
  • Imminent 5G and IoT demand at the forefront of partners’ thinking on infrastructure development.

Telefónica España and infrastructure vendor partner Juniper Networks unveiled plans for the next phase of the telco’s Fusión Red digital network transformation project, which has been underway since 2015 (Telefónicawatch, #100, #104, #105, and #122).

This latest stage is focused on meeting the growing demands for connectivity over the next three years, when 5G services, digital services, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are expected to test operator networks to their limits. Telefónica España intends to build on previous efforts to create a more autonomous and virtualised network through upgrades to increase the density of 100 Gigabit Ethernet and support the move towards 400 Gigabit Ethernet.

The telco has also signed a three-year support agreement with Juniper. The measures are aimed at increasing network capacity; further simplifying and modernising the network; enabling cloud providers, content streaming services, software-as-a-service platforms and other major service providers to connect directly with Telefónica through “high-level connectivity lines”; and supporting enhanced automation to enable faster service provisioning and support.

Joaquín Mata, Chief Technology Officer at Telefónica España, described the extension of the Juniper partnership as “a further step in Telefónica’s technological transformation strategy”, and highlighted the need for an “increasingly scalable, streamlined and highly automated network that can enable rapid service delivery and tailored customer experiences at a competitive price”.

Nokia also in on the act

While Juniper publicised its renewed contract, Telefónica’s other key vendor partner in Fusión Red, Nokia, is also said to have signed a contract extension, maintaining the degree of vendor diversity in the project. Further consideration of the development of the latest deal, and progress of the Fusión Red project will feature in a future Telefónicawatch.
