  • New revenue stream targeted by offering in-car Wi-Fi subscriptions.
  • Telefónica also hoping to find a new channel to promote and sell services.
  • Adding insurance offerings set to be next value-add for the automotive sector.

Telefónica España flagged the launch of a new service called Movistar Car, which is designed to turn any vehicle manufactured after 2004 (2005 for diesel vehicles) into a connected car.

The service consists of a small router that the driver installs in the car and an application to manage the associated services. The router creates a Wi-Fi network inside the car and also generates automatic calls in case of emergency, helps with car maintenance, configures alerts based on the location, and sends “exclusive offers” to the driver.

Up to five devices can be connected to the router, although the data allowance is limited to 3GB per month. The service costs EUR20-per-month, but is available for EUR3 under a promotional period until the end of January 2019.

Telefónica provided few details on the background to the service, although it noted that it extended the Internet of Things (IoT) “experience” to consumers. It also said its IoT platform now connected one million vehicles worldwide. The telco has stressed the importance of connected cars within its overall IoT business and has already been testing connected car use-cases within the framework of its 5G Technological Cities project in Segovia with car manufacturer SEAT (Telefónicawatch, #128).

Worth noting is that Orange Spain already offers a similar service called Car Wi-Fi 4G.

Car insurance next on the agenda

January 2019 reports suggested that Telefónica’s next move in expanding its business in the automotive sector could see it selling car insurance in conjunction with a local insurer. Reports in the Spanish press said that the telco has requested proposals from major insurers with a view to a rapid rollout of joint services.

The Group already has a car insurance offer in the UK, O2 Drive, which is provided in partnership with insurer BGL Group, owner of Comparethemarket.com. Initially unveiled in early-2017, the UK product offers both standard insurance, and ‘black box’-based cover that monitors driving performance (Telefónicawatch, #114).
