  • American player seems to have strengthened account with Coriant purchase.

US optical networking equipment vendor Infinera Corporation flagged progress with its Vodafone account, saying the Group had made its first purchase of the provider’s Infinite Capacity Engine 4 (ICE4) product.

The contract win appears to relate to upgrading of an unnamed submarine cable in Vodafone Carrier Services’ (VCS) international connectivity portfolio – which includes a raft of (owned and part-owned) high-speed transport networks across Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific, and elsewhere (see Vodafonewatch, #173).

Speaking on Infinera’s latest quarterly results presentation, held in February 2019, Chief Executive Thomas Fallon indicated (via CQ FD Disclosure) that the supplier had been “selected for a subsea opportunity with ICE4”. “This is Vodafone’s first deployment of our newest optical engine that delivers leading spectral efficiency to the market”, he added. No further detail was revealed.

Two become one

Fallon went on to note that Infinera’s relationship with Vodafone “continues to expand”, describing the Group as a “long-term partner” of both Infinera and Coriant, the optical gear provider Infinera acquired in 2018. Citing growth in its Europe, Middle East, and Africa business with operators, he cited Infinera as having “cracked more into Vodafone” and as “very, very well positioned with Telefónica”.

Infinera appears to have been a prominent supplier to Cable & Wireless Worldwide (C&WW), the connectivity and enterprise services business Vodafone acquired in 2012 that contributed much of the VCS submarine cable and submarine network footprint. In 2012, the vendor was contracted by C&WW to provide technology to enable the Europe-Persia Express Gateway cable.

Both Coriant and Infinera are among vendors involved in the Vodafone- and Facebook-led Open Optical Packet Transport initiative, which forms part of the high-profile Telecom Infra Project, and recently introduced a Disaggregated Cell Site Gateways backhaul solution for mobile networks (see separate report in the full March release of Vodafonewatch).
