  • Much-hyped offering already needs an update.

Vodafone indicated it was in the midst of a refresh of the platform underlying its V by Vodafone-branded range of consumer Internet of Things (IoT) products.

Speaking during the Group’s latest results presentation, for the quarter to 30 September 2018, Vodafone Chief Executive Nick Read claimed the revamp will “enhance the delivery” of the V by Vodafone suite, which includes safety-geared car-, home-, luggage-, and children-monitoring services.

“The important development we’re working on at the moment is our own platform to enable an end-to-end, seamless experience for customers on [multiple] devices – which, at the moment, is not the case. So, we think we can enhance the delivery on this from the experience we’ve got on our enterprise IoT area, and take market share in this area. ” – Read.

No further detail was offered on the refresh, which does nothing to lessen the impression of V by Vodafone as a somewhat hurried, top-down initiative, pushed by Read’s predecessor Vittorio Colao, when the Group began gestating it in 2016 (Vodafonewatch, #150 and passim).

The comments came as Vodafone Turkey (VfT) became the seventh OpCo to release V by Vodafone-branded products.

The operator’s initial offering includes four devices within the V by Vodafone suite: V-Auto, an own-brand plug-in for car safety; V-Bag, a TCL Communication Technology-supplied luggage tracker; V-Kids Watch, also provided by TCL; and V-Pet, a monitoring device from Kippy. VfT follows Vodafone Germany, Vodafone Ireland, Vodafone Italy, Vodafone Portugal, Vodafone Spain, and Vodafone UK in launching the solutions since late-2017.

The Group has yet to update on V by Vodafone traction in those markets.
