  • Digital transformation will take on a commercial edge as Telefónica Empresas builds on the operator’s commitment to emerging technologies.
  • Telefónica aims to expand and strengthen its wider industry alliances to provide a broad digital portfolio to private and public sector entities.
  • Startups and associates will see a path to market through the restructured enterprise digital communications unit.

Telefónica Group began 2019 with an overhaul of its strategy for the business-to-business market, drawing together its business solutions unit together with the emerging digital services-based entities that are developing next-generation products expected to become central to the operator’s future portfolio.

The services will now be offered under the umbrella of Telefónica Empresas (Telefónica Business), and the new entity will lead the delivery to market of digital communications services, and manage Telefónica’s partnerships and alliances with major players in the digital sector.

Empresas will develop a portfolio of services that draw on areas including:

  • Big data.
  • Connectivity.
  • Cloud services.
  • Digital workplace.
  • IoT.
  • Security.

The target market for the new entity will include private companies and public sector organisations. It appears that Empresas will be building on foundations in Spain, with the launch of the new unit presented by María Jesús Almazor, Chief Executive of Telefónica España, alongside José Cerdán, Chief Executive of Telefónica Business Solutions.

Telefónica major alliance partners namechecked in the Empresas announcement were Amazon, Cisco, Google, and Microsoft. Telefónica also committed to further expanding its partnerships with market leading companies, in pursuit of providing “the most complete” partner ecosystem.

Agile digital units and emerging startups to fuel Empresas growth

The new strategy is to see Telefónica position itself as a partner and guide on digital transformation for business customers, committing to providing end-to-end solutions that will support both internal digital change for clients, and also the delivery of digitally-enabled services to the enterprise’s customers.

Telefónica said that its new portfolio will be built on a digital core based on integrated communications, cloud, and security services, which can then be customised with additional modules based on both Telefónica and third-party solutions. Offerings from Telefónica units including cybersecurity outfit ElevenPaths, big data developer LUCA, and cloud services subsidiary Acens will be fundamental to the Empresas product suite.

Reflecting a growing expectation within Telefónica Group that investment in startups and emerging technology needs to lead to revenue generating opportunities, the various elements of Telefónica Open Future, the innovation and investment hub of the Group, will now be under the Empresas wing. This will include the Wayra incubators across its footprint.

“With Telefónica Empresas, entrepreneurs will have access to all the capabilities, services and solutions of the company’s various business units such as Eleven Paths, Acens, LUCA, On the Spot, Wayra and Digital Retail, through a full commercial offering for both large companies and SMEs, and the public sector. Telefónica Empresas wants to be the trusted partner to carry out the digital transformation of business at a time when digitisation is already a reality and a growing necessity. ” — Cerdán (translated).
