  • Vendor Samsung is building its profile as a member of Telefónica Group’s 5G vendor ecosystem with a new agreement to run the first fixed wireless access (FWA) technology trials in Germany.

Telefónica Deutschland flagged plans to start trials of the alternative last-mile access technology in November 2018, with the participation of 20 households in Hamburg. The trials are expected to last three months, and will involve the use of equipment deployed in 26GHz millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum. This will comprise a virtual core and a 5G radio access unit, as well as 5G outdoor units and indoor routers for customers.

Samsung’s role appears to be as the supplier of “newly developed hardware technology” with “special software” that enables transfer rates of “several” gigabits per-second. The vendor has already been promoting FWA as the first consumer application for 5G, providing an alternative option for people living in areas without a decent fixed broadband connection.

Telefónica has shown a tendency to keep options open in terms of how it will approach 5G. Reflecting this approach, in the area of FWA it has also been testing an alternative air interface technology, the Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation scheme, patented by US-based Cohere Technologies, at 5TONIC Labs and Telefónica’s headquarters in Spain (Telefónicawatch, #125).

Samsung slides along the slipstream

It is not clear why Telefónica Deutschland picked Samsung as its partner for the trial; Ericsson, Huawei Technologies, and Nokia currently have stronger positions within Telefónica’s 5G ecosystem at Group and local level.

The German operator may, though, have been encouraged by a recent similar trial carried out in Romania by Orange together with Cisco Systems and Samsung, for example. In the UK, Arqiva and Samsung also launched the first 5G FWA trial using the 28GHz band in July 2017. According to Analysys Mason, this was Samsung’s first European trial showcasing its ability to deliver speeds in excess of 1Gbps using 300MHz of paired spectrum in the 28GHz band.

Samsung has also been working on FWA in the USA with operator Verizon Wireless, as the former attempts to re-engage with the global network equipment market where it is said to hold a 3% share of a market valued at $37bn (EUR32.2bn) annually. While the sector is a fraction of the size of the smartphone area where Samsung plays from a position of considerable strength, the shift to 5G is seen as an attractive opportunity for the vendor to more seriously re-enter the fray.

Telefónica and Samsung alliance has been building

Telefónica Group has certainly intensified its collaboration with Samsung in the recent past, although the focus has tended to be on exploiting Samsung’s expertise in end-user devices to test networks and services.

For instance, Samsung recently secured publicity for its S9 premium smartphone in Telefónica’s virtual reality demonstration in Segovia, Spain, which was also supported by Nokia’s ‘4.9G’ LTE mobile infrastructure in a ‘pre-5G’ mode (Telefónicawatch, #128). The S9 phone is said to be the only device on the market that is capable of making full use of the up-to-1Gbps connections that Nokia’s network deployment can offer in Segovia.

Cayetano Carbajo Martín, Chief Technology Officer of Telefónica Deutschland, merely remarked that this is the first time the operator is working with Samsung “on the introduction of 5G in connection with FWA” in Germany.

“We are confident that this trial will not only demonstrate the technical feasibility of [FWA] in Germany, but will also provide a better network experience with regard to future technologies. ” – Carbajo Martín.

Beyond 5G headlines, Telefónica and Samsung also agreed an alliance in 2015 that is working on research on Internet of Things and machine-to-machine services (Telefónicawatch, #98). In addition, Samsung was a principal network solutions provider for LTE in Chile (Telefónicawatch, #82).
