EXECUTIVE BRIEF

MAIN STORIES: Telefónica released its full-year results for 2008, demonstrating resilience in a challenging economic environment. The results were well received, although ambitions for 2009 are being scaled back. [pp.3-23.]

Telefónica and Vodafone announced a network-sharing deal covering Spain, the UK, Germany, Ireland, and, potentially, the Czech Republic. The agreement entails Telefónica Europe overcoming previously expressed scepticism over the benefits of network-sharing, and the companies were quick to stress that the new deal would not lead to a reduction in competition, while nevertheless collectively saving nearly EUR55m-per-year. [pp.24-25.]

Management conferences were held by Telefónica in Uruguay and Spain, with senior executives presenting the objectives for the mid-term to managers. The Latin America conference focused on the division’s success in becoming the company’s growth engine, and emphasised the role that the division needs to play in supporting future ambitions. In Spain, meanwhile, European managers were urged to focus on finding new opportunities to exploit, as the “digital world” becomes a reality. [pp.27,32,44-45.]

In Spain, Telefónica reacted to rising unemployment and a dramatic recession by appealing to customer loyalty, with price cuts for unemployed customers, and advice for consumers on how best to reduce communications costs. Guillermo Ansaldo, Chief Executive of the Spanish division, said the company would not engage in a price war, but still acknowledged that his mobile unit will need to emphasise competitive tariffs and attractive subsidised deals on new smartphones. [pp.33-34.]

GROUP: Telefónica was linked to the acquisition of several fixed-line broadband assets in Germany. The prospects of acquiring Hansenet from Telecom Italia were revisited, while a bid for ISP United Internet was also rumoured. Elsewhere, Telefónica Chairman César Alierta ruled out major acquisitions, but indicated that any acquisition proposals by divisional Chief Executives could be backed by the Board. [pp.27,29.]

Telefónica was rumoured to have signed an exclusive distribution deal for Palm’s hot new Pré smartphone. However, the Group was said to have expressed displeasure over Nokia’s plan to preload Skype on its N97 handset, but indicated it had no objections to the VoIP application being made available on the Apple App Store for use on the iPhone. [pp.30-31,61.]

ESPAÑA: Telefónica España was named as the launch partner for the Novatel MiFi mobile hotspot, which enables users to share a Wi-Fi or 3G connection with several devices. A similar service was launched by Telefónica in Argentina. Telefónica also demonstrated an HSPA+ mobile broadband device with Sierra Wireless. 3G customers are to be offered netbooks from Compaq following a deal with Hewlett-Packard. [pp.34-35,45.]

Telefónica’s rivals in Spain are considering the potential for collaboratively investing in the roll out of a next-generation network in the country, to overcome prohibitive costs. [p.36.]

Telefónica and Alcatel-Lucent are to conduct an “extensive” pilot for interactive ‘red button’ advertising on the Imagenio IPTV platform. Telefónica also heralded the introduction of new interactive advertising services across broadband, mobile, and TV platforms, which it claims will enable advertisers to better target customers in fragmented markets. [pp.37,39.]

The Movistar Virtual Developer Lab was announced. The testing service, based on DeviceAnywhere technology, enables remote testing on physical handsets of applications for deployment on the Movistar mobile network. [p.38.]

A pilot trial of NFC mobile payments is underway with applications provider Sermepa. The new solution is intended to enable the details of several credit and debit cards to be maintained on a single SIM. [p.39.]

LATINOAMÉRICA: Telefónica is to promote telepresence video-conferencing as a preferred partner of Cisco in Latin America, as it attempts to build its presence as a provider of services to multi-national corporations. [p.40.]

The rollout of Microsoft Windows Live services across Movistar mobile networks in Latin America was heralded, with phased launches expected from early-2009. [p.42.]

Device startup modu is to distribute its customisable handsets across Latin America following a deal with Telefónica. Meanwhile, Telefónica is entering a partnership with Chilean manufacturer Bess Mobile to make mobile phones and fixed and wireless modems for the local market from a factory in Venezuela. [p.43,52.]

Movistar Argentina is extending its HSDPA 3.5G network, with the aim of covering three-quarters of the country by mid-2009. Venezuela also saw its 3G network footprint expanded. [pp.46,52.]

Bundled high-speed broadband and pay-TV services were launched by Telefónica in Brazil, in conjunction with TVA. The bundled offering will be available on the telco’s new fibre network, as plans for IPTV-over-copper appear unattractive. A pay-TV bundle could be imminent in Argentina, as Telefónica is in talks with satellite broadcaster DirecTV over triple-play services. A pay-TV promotion was also launched in Venezuela. [pp.47,52.]

There were concerns regarding Vivo’s performance in terms of net mobile additions in the slowing Brazilian market, although some analysts saw reason for confidence. Portugal Telecom’s Chief Executive in the country also floated the idea that Vivo could start taking market share from fixed-line players as fixed-mobile substitution becomes more viable. [pp.48-49.]

The European Investment Bank approved a EUR100m loan to Movistar Colombia for development of its mobile network, as the unit announced a EUR140m plan to increase GSM coverage and expand HSDPA coverage to nearly half the population in 2009. In Ecuador, Movistar launched a EUR30m bond issue. [pp.49,50.]

Negotiations are continuing regarding a renewal of Movistar Mexico’s licence, with some uncertainty regarding whether Movistar would be able to offer additional services such as push-to-talk without additional payment. Telefónica del Perú’s operating licence was extended to 2023, after some wrangling, and the telco is now applying for a further extension. [pp.50,51.]

Telefónica del Perú is working with the country’s government to roll out fixed-line voice and broadband services to rural areas, using EUR36m of state funding. [p.51.]

Movistar Uruguay ended the year as the leading mobile operator in terms of market share in the country, just ahead of state-owned Ancel. [p.51.]

TELEFÓNICA EUROPE: Telefónica Europe signed a deal with Amdocs for the provision of a new mobile internet front-end for customers across its footprint, with services already live in the Czech Republic and UK. Nokia Siemens Networks was handed a deal to be sole supplier of 2G and 3G infrastructure in Slovakia and several Czech cities. [pp.53,54.]

NFC trials are underway in the Czech Republic, testing the contactless payment system for use on public transport and with selected retailers. [p.55.]

A new loyalty programme was added in the Czech Republic, while O2 UK extended its Priority Club to all contract subscribers, introduced a ‘friends and family’ version of its simplicity contract, and increased promotional efforts for its Surprises pre-pay scheme. In Germany, the Loop pre-paid SIM promotion was re-launched. [pp.55,57,65-63.]

O2 Germany is to buy more than 80 retail outlets from freenet AG, as it expands and updates its distribution network in the country. [p.57.]

HSPA+ services are to be made available in Germany in H209, with the operator working in partnership with Huawei. A raft of further mobile broadband offers were also announced. [p.58.]

There were signs that O2 Ireland is beginning to make an impact on the market for corporate mobile services, as rivalry with market leader Vodafone intensifies. O2 Analyser, a telecoms expense management tool, was launched for business customers. [pp.59-60.]

There were reports of job cuts at O2 UK call centres, although it was maintained that this was part of ongoing restructuring, rather than economy-driven redundancies. O2 UK Chief Executive Ronan Dunne has indicated that cuts due to market conditions remain unlikely. [pp.61,64-66.]

There were reports that O2 UK was set to clear stocks of iPhones ahead of a new version of the handset in the summer, and it was indicated that O2′s exclusivity agreement with Apple would cover the new device. O2 Joggler, a device for managing personal information, was launched. [p.64.]

ASSOCIATES & INVESTMENTS: Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent trumpeted deals with China Unicom for 3G infrastructure. There were reports that Unicom had secured an iPhone contract with Apple. Portugal Telecom reported strong results, boosted by Vivo’s performance. Telecom Italia said results showed its cost-cutting programme was on track, but there were management concerns regarding continued efforts to force a network sell-off. [pp.68-78.]

CZECH REPUBLIC

NSN handed 2G and 3G deal

Telefónica Europe awarded a contract to Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to extend its mobile infrastructure in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

The three-year deal, the vendor said, will see it acting as the sole supplier of 2G and 3G infrastructure in Slovakia, as well as the Czech Republic’s two major cities, Prague and Brno. However, the 3G portion of the contract in Slovakia is optional.

NSN said it will supply Telefónica O2 Slovakia and Telefónica O2 Czech Republic (TOCR) with its Flexi base stations, providing the operator with “significant savings” in terms of required space and power consumption, and a smooth migration path to next-generation network standard Long Term Evolution (LTE). It will also provide O2 with network implementation and maintenance services.

” We are committed to offering our customers the best services, and our continued cooperation with Nokia Siemens Networks will ensure a smooth expansion of our 2G and 3G mobile networks in Prague and Brno by state-of-the art technology.”
– Petr Slovacek, Vice President, Operations, Telefónica O2 Czech Republic.

NSN did not disclose the value of the contract, but said it “reaffirms” its role as a strategic partner for Telefónica’s operations in the two countries. In October 2008, TOCR announced it had recruited Chinese vendor Huawei Technologies to upgrade its 2G network and expand its 3G infrastructure in Prague and Brno (Telefónicawatch, 2008.09).

” On completing the trial of our Flexi EDGE BTS, O2 opted to go with us because they recognised that our unique design and architecture is one of the most cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable solutions available in the industry today. The scope of the deal is significant as it consolidates our position as their lead supplier from now until 2011. ”
– Thomas Riedel, NSN.

The deal follows an announcement in February 2009 that highlighted NSN’s involvement in the rollout of 3G services in Spain (Telefónicawatch, 2009.01).

Telefónica O2 Czech Republic starts NFC trials

Telefónica O2 Czech Republic (TOCR) announced it is collaborating with the municipality of Pilsen transport authority to conduct multi-application near-field communication (NFC) trials, using NXP’s MIFARE contactless technology, starting from March 2009.

The trials, which will be conducted in two phases and last nine months, will allow participants to use NFC handsets to pay for entrance to entertainment facilities, goods in participating retail outlets, and travel.

In the first phase, which ends in June 2009, customers will be able to download the NFC transit application via the TOCR network, while in the second phase, end users will be able to top-up their e-wallet and buy bus tickets directly from their NFC-enabled handset, using MIFARE4Mobile technology, again over TOCR’s network.

” This project is a unique opportunity for [TOCR] to collect important user and business partners’ experience, and fine tune the NFC business model essential to a successful commercial rollout expected [at the] end of 2009. [TOCR will] hereby demonstrate how a mobile network operator, a service provider, and a technology provider can cooperate in an environment where rules are still undefined. ”
– David Brendl, Head of m-Commerce and NFC Product Development, Telefónica O2 Czech Republic.

The Czech trials follow earlier O2 trials in the UK, and come at a time when Telefónica España is also looking at NFC mobile payment technology with Sermepa (see separate report).

New loyalty scheme for TOCR

Telefónica O2 Czech Republic (TOCR) introduced a new loyalty programme in March 2009 to replace the existing Benefit scheme.

The O2 Extra programme will be available to broadband, fixed-line, and pre-pay customers, and will offer opportunities to obtain tickets for concerts and sporting events, as well as offers from partners. Customers must register for the programme, and a business-oriented version for corporate customers is also to be launched.

TOCR launches Top-up and Win contest

Telefónica O2 Czech Republic announced a “Top-up and Win” competition, offering all pre-paid customers the chance to win prizes, such as gaming consoles, iPods, mobile phones, notebooks, O2 credit top-up coupons, televisions, or vouchers for the purchase of a wide variety of goods, at every top-up. The top prize each month is a luxury holiday or “adrenalin experience” worth CZK 150,000 (EUR5,518).

Any customer topping up between 23 February and 31 May 2009 will be automatically entered into the competition, but they need to log onto the company’s website to find out if they have won.

Each day, 150 winning top-up times will be published with a corresponding prize on the website, and the customer who tops-up their credit at that time, or at the time closest to it, wins the prize that corresponds with that time.

TOCR offers 30%-discount on NEON tariffs

Telefónica O2 Czech Republic (TOCR) announced a promotion, offering 30%-discount on their monthly fee for the entire duration of an agreed-upon commitment period for customers signing up to an unlimited O2 NEON tariff, or the O2 [:kul:] youth tariff.

The promotion was set to run for the first two weeks of March 2009, and customers signing for contracts of two or three years will receive the reduction for the duration of their agreement.

The company is also offering customers who choose the O2 NEON XL tariff a 50%-discount until the end of March 2009.

” We introduced a similar short-term event for the first time last year and it was very well received. Therefore, we decided to repeat it and offer our customers the opportunity to call or send messages for a truly exceptional price. For the duration of this offer, new customers will even have the opportunity to use a two-month trial period, during which they can see whether the concept of tariffs with unlimited calling is beneficial to them. They can then decide whether they want to keep their new tariff or stop using it without being penalised. “
– Jan Karas, Director for Segment Marketing, Telefónica O2 Czech Republic.

TOCR re-appoints Zabka as spokesman

Telefónica O2 Czech Republic (TOCR) announced the re-appointment of Martin Zabka as company spokesman. He previously held this position for four years, before taking a “short break”.

The appointment follows the departure of Vlastimil Srsen, the company’s Media Relations department head, who, over the past few months, had also assumed the role of company spokesman.

” [Srsen] accepted a position in the state sector. I would like to thank him for his excellent work for our company and wish him further success in his career. At the same time, it is with pleasure that I state that Martin Zabka is returning to the position of Telefónica O2 spokesman. ”
– Jiri Suchman, Director for Public Affairs and Regulation, Telefónica O2 Czech Republic.
