EXECUTIVE BRIEF
SMART DEVICES: HTC announced its second Android device, with Magic set to be partially Vodafone Group-exclusive. Otherwise, there was little in the way of firm Android developments, although Huawei Technologies showcased an Android-powered smartphone. [pp.6,9.]
Microsoft unveiled Windows Mobile 6.5, its anticipated update to the platform, offering improvements to the user interface. LG Electronics named Windows Mobile as its “primary smartphone platform”, with plans to rapidly increase the number of devices it offers using the OS. [pp.15-16,10-11.]
Two new touch-screen Symbian OS devices were announced, by Samsung and Sony Ericsson — indicating that momentum behind the platform remains as it undergoes its ‘open’ metamorphosis. While Samsung’s unit, OMNIA HD, is production-ready, Sony Ericsson’s Idou is still at the prototype stage. [pp.24-25.]
Nokia announced five new Symbian OS-powered devices, with two new Eseries devices, Classic and Navigator units, and an eight-megapixel Nseries camera phone. Nokia also announced a partnership with Qualcomm, to drive Symbian OS take-up in North America. LG Electronics discreetly announced a new Symbian OS device, called LG-KT770. [pp.17-19,12.]
HTC announced Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2, incrementally updating the earlier Diamond and Pro handhelds. HTC said it is to end its ODM business, which has dwindled in significance in recent years, as it also took a conservative view for its performance in early-2009. HTC’s dominance in the Windows Mobile ecosystem was in the spotlight. [pp.7,8,16.]
The LiMo Foundation added Telefónica and SK Telecom to its board, but its vendor portfolio still looks limited. The Symbian Foundation announced 14 more supporters, although its device-maker customer base remains unchanged. It was reported that Google had ceded to an Apple request to omit multi-touch support from Android, in order to protect the companies’ existing relationship. [pp.12-13,29,20.]
Acer announced several new handhelds, building on the product line it acquired with its E-TEN Information Systems buy. There was renewed speculation that Dell has a converged device in the works, after the company’s plans were “outed” by an AT&T executive, although the resulting reports were played down by those involved. [pp.2-3,5.]
Sony Ericsson unveiled its Entertainment Unlimited strategy, although it is not entirely clear what this will mean in practice; a convergence of features across previously diverse product lines is likely. [p.26.]
Research In Motion increased its subscriber additions forecast, bucking the otherwise gloomy trend in the mobile market — although a number of factors will still impact its margins. A 3G Curve family device was rumoured. [pp.22,23.]
MOBILE VALUE-ADDED SERVICES: Widgets were the topic of the day, with T-Mobile revamping web’n'walk with widget support, and Orange announcing its widget rollout plans. Sony Ericsson partnered to tightly integrate several Orange services into its devices for the operator, with SE also doing a similar job for 3 Group — although, in this case, working with third-party applications. [pp.42,41,44.]
Microsoft announced a number of new partners for various Windows Live services, including América Móvil and Telefónica in Latin America, and MEA operator Orascom. Nokia was hit by an Ovi outage, losing customer data as a result. Bouygues Telecom, Orange France, and SFR, and separately Telefónica, are involved in Rich Communications Services pilots. [pp.47-48,49.]
Belgium’s BASE debuted a revamped portal, called BASE corner, which serves customers in three languages. Yahoo! also announced a new mobile internet proposition, called Yahoo! Mobile. Verizon Wireless introduced content-optimisation technology for its Mobile Web service. [pp.44,45,43.]
Telefónica highlighted its mobile advertising efforts, although its plans are still in a pilot stage. Belgian operators BASE and Mobistar partnered with Microsoft for mobile advertising. [pp.30.]
Vodafone Group joined Opera Software to develop a custom Opera Mini browser, intended to drive mobile internet use in emerging markets. O2 UK is incentivising customers to participate in its O2 Litmus application programme, to assess software in return for rewards. Apple was deemed to be having a negative impact on app pricing, due to the low cost of much of the software sold through its store. [pp.31,32.]
It was reported that South Korean mobile broadcast services are failing to gain traction, auguring badly for deployments in other markets. The Broadcast Mobile Convergence Forum is exploring hybrid cellular/broadcast service models. [pp.32,33.]
América Móvil is working with Nokia on location-based services, across multiple markets and targeting owners of Nokia mobile phones. T-Mobile and Nokia are working on widget sales, as Nokia debuted its Ovi application and content store. [pp.34,51,52.]
The GSM Association announced several new enabling partners for its money-transfer services, while also partnering with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to drive m-commerce in the developing world. Juniper Research warned that mobile money transfers will be impacted by the global economic crisis. [pp.35,36,37.]
Motorola is to dispose of its Good Technology business, selling to consumer mobile-email player Visto, a deal seen as Motorola offloading a struggling business as it attempts to put its house in order. 3 Hong Kong partnered with Neverfail to offer robust BlackBerry services. [pp.38,33.]
SK Telecom and RealNetworks extended their mobile music partnership, agreeing to work together until 2011. New music stores were launched by Orange Romania and Cricket Communications, a US regional operator. Nokia announced Comes With Music launches in Singapore and Australia. [pp.40,41.]
Push-to-talk penetration in North America will reach 8.5% by 2013, according to ABI Research, although, elsewhere, the picture will be very different. Nokia is to integrate Skype with its Nseries devices, enabling VoIP services. [pp.53.]
MARKETS AND TRENDS: Investment house Nomura branded positive pictures of the smartphone market as “optimistic”, stating that 2009 shipment growth will be flat when compared to 2008 numbers. ABI Research predicted that dual-mode device shipments will double by 2010, with the growth curve rising through to 2013. [pp.56.]
AT&T warned that fragmentation in the mobile app store market could stifle growth, with a number of operators and device vendors recently rolling out their own offerings. Third-party mobile service players performed strongly at the GSM Association Awards, with operator-originated products weak in comparison. [pp.57-58,59.]
EXTRACT
MICROSOFT: Windows 6.5 announced; supporting services unveiled
Microsoft officially confirmed its Windows Mobile 6.5 platform, which some observers criticised as being little more than a cosmetic refresh of Windows Mobile 6.1, with a new online backup service debuted, and an application store powered by an on-device client also showcased.
Windows Mobile 6.5 includes a new home screen, with a “dashboard-like experience” providing easy access to items such as texts and emails, missed calls, and calendar appointments. It has an improved touch-screen interface, and supports the updated version of Internet Explorer Mobile.
The platform also includes Windows Marketplace for Mobile, described as a “rich and integrated marketplace for searching, browsing, and purchasing mobile applications from Windows phones or from a PC [personal computer] simply by using a Windows Live ID”. The integrated offering is said to help customers to “easily find, install, and experience” new applications, with developers able to offer products via the store after a “simple security and compatibility check from Microsoft”.
Also announced was a free service called My Phone, which enables customers to access, manage, and back-up personal information to a password-protected web service. Through automatic synchronisation, customers can ensure content is backed up without the need for direct input, making it possible to “preserve content that, in the past, would have lived and died on the phone”. My Phone is currently available on a “limited, invitation-only” beta.
“Windows phones”
While no changes have been made to the Windows Mobile (WM) branding, Microsoft and its partners are now referring to devices as “Windows phones”, presumably to play down the “mobile” element while aligning the smartphones more with other Windows computers.
Supporter statements
Microsoft issued a list of companies supporting Windows Mobile 6.5, although details of their planned activities were somewhat sketchy. So far, the only units confirmed for WM6.5 is LG Electronics’ LG-GM7300 and HTC’s Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2.
Hewlett-Packard said it plans to support the platform on “future smartphone devices”, in line with its strategy of “continuing its efforts to deliver the latest wireless technologies to the diverse mobile professional market”.
Other named supporters were: vendors Acer, Garmin-Asus, GIGA-BYTE Communications, and Palm; and operators Bell Mobility (Canada), Celcom Mobile (Malaysia), Chunghwa Telecom (Taiwan), COSMOTE Group (Southern Europe), NTT DoCoMo (Japan), SingTel (Singapore), SmarTone-Vodafone (Hong Kong), SOFTBANK Mobile (Japan), Tata Teleservices (India), Telefónica Group, Telstra (Australia), Willcom (Japan), and WIND Hellas (Greece).
Some significant names have yet to issue support for WM6.5, primarily Samsung, although its omission is probably not significant — Motorola is also omitted, but has separately said it will support the platform.
Interestingly, of the backing operators, Microsoft has significant support from Japan, where its penetration has so far been somewhat limited.
HTC dominance
mocoNews.net noted that at Microsoft’s press conference, the platform company said that, to date, more than 50 million devices based on Windows Mobile had shipped, which was followed by an HTC presentation, where the vendor claimed to have sold more than 40 million devices using the operating system (OS). Based on these numbers, this suggests that HTC has accounted for 80% of Windows Mobile device sales — highlighting its significance, and dominance, in the Microsoft partner ecosystem.
While the assessment is based on comments made in a presentation, which used “more thans” rather than firm numbers, it is a clear indication of the strength of HTC — and therefore the relative weakness of Microsoft’s other partners, including LG Electronics, Motorola, Palm, and Samsung, all of which have offered multiple devices using the platform. It is possible (even probable) that HTC’s figures include terminals it has manufactured for other partners rather than designed itself; but, even if this is the case, it still puts the company in a commanding position.
Previously, much of the criticism regarding Symbian OS has been the fact that Nokia has dominated sales, giving it a disproportionate strength in the ecosystem, while Microsoft has been keen to trumpet the diversity of its WM partner base. While it has always been obvious that HTC is the most committed Windows Mobile partner, it now appears that the company has a Nokia-esque domination of shipments.
It should also be noted that the sales are “lifetime” Windows Mobile shipments, and HTC was largely unique in supporting the platform in its early days. WM shipments in the recent past are likely to be somewhat better spread, although HTC still undoubtedly ships the lion’s share of terminals using the platform.
Presentation highlights
In a presentation at Mobile World Congress 2009, Steve Ballmer, Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft, said there are already eleven “unique” Windows Mobile-powered devices, which have sold more than one million units, an achievement deemed “phenomenal by any stretch of the imagination”.
In the previous twelve months, “more than 30″ Windows Mobile phones were brought to market, with Microsoft’s partners including “more than 50 companies that make phones, over 160 mobile phone operators, and almost 500,000 software development companies that are writing applications”.
