  • Elevation in status follows recalibration of two providers’ partnership, in bid for new growth opportunities.

T-Systems (T-Sys) re-emphasised the importance of its ties with enterprise software player SAP by securing Global Platinum Reseller Partner status from the vendor.

The division said the move placed it within the top ten of SAP’s “approximately 5,000” resellers across the world, and reflected its “special expertise in SAP platforms and products”. Other Global Platinum Reseller Partners include Germany-based service provider itelligence, part of NTT Data.

Elena María Ordóñez del Campo, Senior Vice-President of SAP Solutions at T-Sys, called the move “reward for an excellent strategic cooperation with SAP”, and stressed the unit’s position as the “only global provider of managed end-to-end services for SAP”.

SAP happy

SAP is arguably T-Sys’s highest profile affiliate. Although T-Sys has not provided recent figures on the scale of their partnership, it claimed in 2015 to be serving more than 2.6 million SAP users, making it the software provider’s largest partner (although this figure pales in comparison to the 150 million users SAP claimed to serve overall as of end-2017). In the year to 31 December 2017, around EUR500m of T-Sys’s EUR6.9bn in revenue appears to have come from the SAP Solutions business (and other activities with SAP may well contribute elsewhere, too). SAP has also recently been flagged as a key partner of the Europe segment’s latest business-to-business growth drive (Deutsche Telekomwatch, #74).

The status change adds to the impression that SAP has emerged particularly strongly from partnership changes accompanying T-Sys’s latest restructuring programme. T-Sys formed a front-line SAP Solutions team within its Growth Portfolios segment when announcing its new structure earlier in 2018 – the only unit exclusively focused on a specific vendor or partner (Deutsche Telekomwatch, #71, #72, and #74). T-Sys Chief Executive Adel Al-Saleh has also recently talked up his “personal relationships with multiple board members” at SAP.

Details on the make-up of the SAP Solutions unit remain light, but T-Sys has indicated that it is being “reshaped” as part of the restructuring, presumably to focus more closely on growth opportunities over “traditional” large-scale IT services contracts where T-Sys has struggled to gain any margin. Recent months, for example, have seen a new Internet of Things partnership formed around SAP’s Leonardodigital innovation system”; certification of T-Sys’s flagship Open Telekom Cloud public cloud platform for use with SAP’s HANA database management applications; and joint development of a cloud migration model called the SAP Cloudifier.

For more on this story, including a table outlining T‑Sys’s “re-defined” portfolio structure, see the full November release of Deutsche Telekomwatch.
