  • DT willing to explore innovative open-source partnerships with vendors, evidenced by tie-up with US-based Aricent.

In September 2018, DT and US-based Aricent announced the creation of an Open Source Edge software framework. It is designed especially for developers, as well as PaaS and cloud-native, multi-access edge computing technologies. The goal is to intersect with the deployment of 5G-enabled network edge facilities targeted at delivering ultra-low latency network applications. The “cost-effective” edge platform is built for software-defined data centres and is decentralised.

Before announcing the tie-up, DT and Aricent said they had trialled the software framework in Germany, which involved the support of various developers under the auspices of Group incubator hub:raum.

Some industry-watchers saw a parallel between DT’s tie-up with Aricent and a recent launch of the Akraino Edge Stack, a Linux Foundation project. Akraino‘s goal – to build an “open source software stack that supports high-availability cloud services optimised for edge computing systems and applications” – seems similar to the ambitions espoused by DT and Aricent.

Media outlet TelecomTV questioned Shamik Mishra, Associate VP of Technology & Innovation at Aricent, on whether there was room for two, seemingly similar, open source projects. “There is certainly a place for multiple platforms, and we are also very interested in what Akraino is doing”, he said.

“What we wanted to do was keep the developers in mind [with our project]. When I say developers, I mean the application developers for edge computing. Today it’s hard for them to navigate the complexity of the telcos’ ecosystem as application developers tend not to be familiar with telcos, while telcos may not really be understanding their requirements. Our open source solution is developer-centric.” – Shamik.

Tomasz Gerszberg, SVP of Edge Computing at DT – perhaps unsurprisingly, given his job title – said edge computing was vital to “achieve the full benefits of 5G for our customers”. He underlined DT’s strategy of joining forces with ecosystem partners to accelerate innovation and the adoption of new technology.

DT, HPE parade multi-vendor VNF integration

Further evidence that DT is pushing vendors harder on delivery of cloud-native architecture came with recent news that the Group had tied with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) to showcase a Network Data Layer (NDL) proof-of-concept for 5G ‘service-based’ architecture.

The development purportedly allows VNFs from different vendors to work together within the same cloud infrastructure. Curiously, no mention was made of specific VNF vendors that proved integration was possible, nor was much detail given on the VNFs put through their paces.

HPE did mention, however, that DT deployed the NDL using the supplier’s Shared Data Environment (SDE) and that it was compliant with principles of the Unified Data Layer specified by various standardisation bodies. The idea is to simplify the creation of end-user services by exposing network capabilities to both operator services and third-party applications. There is also the promise of improved performance of “heterogeneous network environments”, and that savings can be had on network resources and increased operational efficiency.

HPE further insisted that the VNFs handled were of the “cloud-native” variety. It flagged DT’s implementation of Policy Charging and Rule Function as way of example of VNF integration into the HPE SDE.
