  • Revenue and EBITDA per FTE, FY17–18 (Sources: BT, BTwatch)

Included in the new BT Group KPIs is a breakdown of employees at each division (measured on a full-time equivalency (FTE) basis). Considering these numbers in relation to the associated BT division’s revenue and EBITDA-level profit to generate a chart on per capita performance provides some insight into the nature of the work undertaken across the Group.

Openreach, for example, can be seen as a considerable contributor to earnings, despite being highly labour-intensive and with low comparative revenue.

Global Services, in contrast, highlights its considerable challenge. The division has by far the lowest level of profit per employee, and the level of revenue generated per employee is markedly less than the other retail and enterprise-focused businesses. The division’s transformation programme is in relatively early days, but the transition to digital services is expected to result in improved margins on potentially lower revenue. The progression of earnings per capita at the division may prove a useful guide to the effectiveness of the new approach.
